Feeds

How far in advance can I prepare and soak my horse’s feed?

All our mashes soak in under 10 minutes, so they are quick and easy to prepare at each mealtime. For owners who would like to soak feeds in advance, we recommend that feeds are only prepared a maximum of 12 hours before feeding, i.e., soaking the evening feed in the morning and the morning feed the evening before.

Prepared feeds should be kept covered and in a cool place during warmer months so they don't spoil and well insulated in colder months to prevent freezing. Add more water immediately before feeding to loosen the feed, as some moisture will have been lost due to evaporation.

Are your recommended feeding amounts dry weight or once the feed is soaked?

All our recommended feeding amounts are given as a dry weight before adding water to the feed.

Do I need to add a balancer or vitamin and mineral supplement to your feeds?

All Allen & Page feeds are fully balanced with vitamins and minerals when fed at the recommended amounts for bodyweight and workload. If you are feeding less than the recommended amount due to your horse being a good doer, we recommend topping up with a powdered vitamin and mineral supplement to ensure a balanced diet.

How much of your feeds does a Stubbs scoop hold?

Please consult the handy table below for how much a Stubbs scoop generally holds. It is always a good idea to weigh your scoops to ensure accuracy, as we all interpret a full scoop differently!

Do you make any feeds that do not require soaking?

Yes, we have ‘L’ Mix, Ride & Relax, and Power & Performance that only need dampening well prior to feeding. To discuss whether any of these would be suitable for your horse or pony, please contact our Nutritional Helpline by clicking here or calling 01362 822 902.

Why do you recommend that an unmolassed chaff be fed alongside your feeds?

Many owners like to feed chaff alongside a mash feed to further slow consumption and increase fibre intake. As all our Allen & Page feeds are molasses-free, if owners wish to feed a chaff, we recommend going for an unmolassed option to keep sugar levels down. Popular choices are Honeychop Lite & Healthy, Honeychop Topline & Shine and Honeychop Super Senior.

I keep my horse at an organic livery. Am I able to use your feeds?

Our horse feeds are not organic, but we are a non-GM company producing non-GM feeds.  As a non-GM company, we can provide GMO declarations for horse owners who use our products on organic farms so that when the farm is audited, these can be supplied to the certification body.

Do you send samples of your feeds?

We do have samples of most of our Barley and Molasses Free and Specialist Ranges available, and we are more than happy to post them out for your horse or pony to try before you commit to buying a large bag.

To request a sample, please fill out our online nutritional enquiry form here or call our friendly team at 01362 822 902.

My horse is competing in affiliated competitions. Can I use your feeds?

Yes. Allen & Page manufactures to a strict code of feed safety, with all products produced in our mill in Shipdham, Norfolk.
We also have our lab, where we test our horse feed ingredients and final feeds for naturally occurring prohibited substances (NOPS) before releasing them for delivery to our stockists. We are proud members of the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) voluntary code of practice for feed manufacturers, whose guidelines ensure the risk of NOPS occurrence is minimised.
